Malfunction of the weekNovember 21, 2008
Numerous people have contacted CameraFRAUD.com to report a photo scam cam malfunctioning in Tempe:
Graham emails in:
I was sitting at the Starbucks on the SE corner of this intersection today (Wed, Nov 19, 6:15 pm). The camera monitoring E-W Guadalupe traffic is having an epileptic fit, flashing every couple of seconds on legitimate traffic (only when E-W travel is moving). I’m just waiting for the inevitable crash that this is going to cause, although it’s kind of funny to watch the light show. Love your site, keep up the good work.
Many people have also noted the incident on the AZCentral.com forum:
“Moneystacks” wrote:
I drove by McClintock and Guadalupe the other night and the camera was malfunctioning. It flashed on every (no joke) car that went through the intersection on the GREEN light. The light had just turned green so no one was speeding. Bottom line, I don’t trust those things.
“undr8d”:
i think i was there when that happened!! i think it was wednesday or monday night around 9:20pm. That camera flashed me when i went on a green light, and all the other cars behind me as well, there better not be any ticket in the mail!!
“CoachPeete”:
I live near that intersection. It does that all the time!! I swear at least once a week it will flash for every car during a certain cycle right after the light turns green.
“cassiela”:
I was there when that was happening! It really was taking everyone’s picture. I live near there, but that was the first time I’ve ever seen that happen. If I get a ticket in the mail, it’ll be going right in the trash. What a joke.
Tempe’s scam operation is headed by Redflex.

Republican Party Chairman Condemns Photo ScamsNovember 19, 2008
While addressing a crowd of approximately 50 people Wednesday night, Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen expressed disapproval of automated ticketing, calling for the removal of photo enforcement equipment.
“We need to take (the cameras) all down and put them on the border facing Mexico,” responded Pullen to a question asking the Republican Party’s official stance on photo enforcement. The Chairman was addressing Republican members of legislative district 18 in Mesa.

Sticking It To The ManNovember 18, 2008
An unknown group of people have been quietly expressing disapproval with Arizona’s new freeway photo scheme by taking a unique approach, potentially putting Redflex in a “sticky” situation.
The end result of the mystery activists’ efforts is the placement of Post-It notes on photo scam equipment throughout the valley. Reports have surfaced that numerous cameras have been involved over the past two weeks. At least two local Phoenix television stations are known to be researching the incidents.
In a photo obtained by CameraFRAUD.com, activists left the words “honest mistake,” possibly a reference to an incident earlier this year when Redflex CEO Karen Finley claimed that their usage of unapproved and non-FCC certified equipment was an “honest oversight.”
Redflex is no stranger to the convenience of Post It notes as detailed in the article “Arizona Official Confirms Redflex Falsified Speed Camera Documents:”
Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer last week confirmed that documents used to convict motorists… contained elements that had been falsified. Brewer revoked the license of Cheryl Krough, notary public for photo enforcement vendor Redflex after concluding that she violated four Arizona laws while purporting to certify a speed camera deployment form for use in official hearings.
The secretary of state’s office expressed a certain amount of indignation that in response to an investigation of the matter by the Arizona Attorney General’s office, Krough, “wrote a short response to the complaint on a post it note.”

“Camera Inaccuracy”November 17, 2008
Tom writes:
Tonight I was going 64 MPH on cruise control in a 65 MPH zone on I-10, and a temporary camera flashed at me. I expect a ticket in a few weeks. I doubled back and re-drove the same stretch of I-10, but in a far lane, at only 60 MPH. I saw several cars in a row, going the same speed I was but in the “curb lane,” getting flashed by the temporary camera. It sure seems like a money-making scheme for the state.
Comments about “if you’re going the speed limit, you don’t have to worry” are just not true! The camera operators can set the cameras to any speed they want, and calibrate them to show you’re going faster than you really are!
Redflex is deploying countless numbers of these snap-happy drones all over the state, as previously documented during a past excursion on the 1-10 near the 7th St tunnel.

ATS To Introduce Overweight Photo Scam CamsNovember 16, 2008
No, we aren’t making this headline up.
In fact, the official press release headline from American Traffic Solutions is this discombobulated, almost incoherent wall of text: “American Traffic Solutions to Unveil Overweight and Overheight Vehicle Photo Enforcement Systems at World Congress on ITS in NY.”
Freakishly tall? Overweight? Our first thought was that Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano was going to become the “Photo Enforcer,” a Godzilla-like monster attacking motorists and ripping wallets from back pockets as she desperately tries to balance the budget on the backs of the citizens. (Imagine the screams: “Ahh! Janzilla!”)
To our disappointment, it turns out ATS is instead pitching a new revenue scheme to photograph and cite vehicles that are too tall or heavy:
ATS’ Axsis(TM) WIM-300 (Weight-in-Motion) system uses a combination of quartz weight-sensitive sensors embedded in the road and a roadside system that automatically monitors and isolates heavy vehicles. The sensors “read” the weight of a vehicle and can detect an overweight vehicle. Similarly, the Axsis(TM) Overheight photo enforcement system uses a laser to measure the vehicle’s height and detect violations. Images and video clips of the offending vehicles are captured similar to red-light and speed camera images. Images and data are transmitted to an ATS Data Center for enforcement.
First ATS sues “rival” Redflex for a smooth $100 million, and now they want friggin lasers on the friggin freeways to “measure” you?
Dr. Evil would be proud.

“One Hundred Million Dollars!”November 13, 2008
ATS has sued rival scam-cam vendor Redflex Group for $100 Million dollars, saying Redflex acted “illegally by using radar units that lacked required government certification”
Further proving that its for the children all they want to do is take your money, ATS is not only suing for the $100 Mil, they want the profits from the illegitimate tickets:
The ATS lawsuit asked for damages, its own lost profits and for Redflex’ profits from use of non-certified radar. “Damages are substantial and may approach $100 million,” the lawsuit stated.
CameraFRAUD.com’s BFF (best-fraud-forever), Shoba Vashawahwhatever, apparently wasn’t too talkative:
…Redflex spokeswoman Shoba Vaitheeswaran on Thursday declined comment on the lawsuit filed Nov. 5.
Of course, a little bird tells us that the 100 mil figure was no accident: rumor has it that ATS top execs were watching “SWAT” during a board meeting and figured the number sounded good while being screamed out in a pseudo French accent.

Top ATS, Redflex Employees Ignore TicketsNovember 1, 2008
“Do as we say, not as we do.”
That seems to be the modus operandi for some top employees of the two primary scam-cam vendors, American Traffic Solutions and “rival” Redflex Group.
September 2005: Public records show that Shoba Vaitheeswaran (Redflex’s Media Relations spokeswoman) was the defendant/respondent in an unspecified photo enforcement case. After ignoring the extortion letter sent by Scottsdale Police and the Scottsdale Municipal Court, her citation was dismissed under Arizona’s Rule 4:
“The defendant has 90 days from the date of filing to be served with the citation, pursuant to A.R.S. § 28-1592(B)(2). After 120 days, the court shall dismiss the citation, pursuant to Rule 4(i), Arizona Rules of Civil Procedure.”
May 2006: John Petrozza, ATS’s Executive Vice President of Field Operations, appears to have ignored his Scottsdale traffic citation, which was dismissed under Rule 4 (almost exactly 120 days after being filed.) It’s unclear if he intentionally avoided the process server, commonly called “dodging service.”
July 2008: ATS President James Tuton is listed as defendant/respondent for a Scottsdale traffic citation. Tuton appearently also ignored his extortion letter from Scottsdale, and the summons was turned over to a process server. The most recent update to the case seems to indicate that on 9/30/2008 Tuton was either served or voluntarily waived service.
It’s unclear if Tuton is actually going to fight his ticket, which would be really amusing due to the likelyhood that his company actually issued it. We’ll bring the popcorn to that dog-and-pony courtroom showdown.
So, allow us to momentarily enter the Twilight Zone while we, uh, applaud …?… these people for ignoring the fraudulent photo enforcement tickets.

ATS Investor Receives Bailout MoneyOctober 30, 2008
It’s official: Goldman Sachs, the troubled firm which sunk over $50 million into scam-cam vendor American Traffic Solutions last month, is now the recipient of a sizable infusion itself.
This time, you’re the investor.
The nine banks to get half of the $250 billion to be invested by the government as part of a massive rescue bailout of the financial system are: Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, Bank of New York Mellon, State Street and Merrill Lynch, soon to be taken over by Bank of America.
Half of $250 billion is $125 billion, divided by nine leaves $13.8 billion for Goldman Sachs.
What a scheme! You pay for the tickets. You pay for the bailout. And, you pay for the insurance.
Didn’t we warn you that “All They Want To Do Is Take Your Money?
